To coś więcej niż orkiestra. To symbol nadziei, siły i kulturowej tożsamości Ukrainy.
The Youth Academic Symphony Orchestra "Slobozhansky" was one of the brightest highlights on Ukraine's cultural map. Founded in 1993 by the distinguished oboist, professor, and People's Artist of Ukraine, Gariy Artushevich Abadzhyan, it immediately attracted the most talented young musicians from across the country.
Unfortunately, the war interrupted this remarkable story. The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced the orchestra to suspend its activities in Kharkiv. The city, which had been home to the orchestra for years, found itself engulfed in conflict, and its residents, along with cultural institutions, faced unimaginable losses.
Operating in Poland, the orchestra performs on national and international stages, organizes educational concerts, and builds bridges between cultures. NADIIA is a symbol of the power of art and the spirit that perseveres even in the toughest times.
The NADIIA Orchestra is a group of young, talented artists united by their passion for music and unwavering determination to preserve Ukrainian culture. Its members include former musicians from MASO Kharkiv and artists from various regions of Ukraine whose paths crossed during the war.
As part of its residency in Poland, the orchestra has performed on numerous concert stages and at festivals in Poland and abroad, giving over 100 symphonic concerts.
In collaboration with Polish music institutions, particularly the Academy of Music in Katowice, we have organized conducting courses and co-produced opera performances.
We have given over 100 chamber concerts in schools, kindergartens, senior centers, libraries, cultural centers, and at conferences.
We participate in globally significant events, such as the „Symphony of Freedom” concert in Vienna and „Solidarity with Ukraine” at the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw.
Poland has become a second home for the NADIIA Orchestra – a place where young Ukrainian musicians have found the space to continue their artistic mission and rebuild in challenging times. Thanks to the support of Polish institutions, NADIIA has not only survived but also thrived, becoming a symbol of Ukrainian culture on the global stage.
In May 2022, the first six weeks of the residency were hosted by the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice. It was here that the orchestra held its initial rehearsals, concerts, and workshops, rediscovering its place in the world. The inaugural concert, conducted by Maestro Jurek Dybał and featuring American violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn, marked a symbolic beginning of this extraordinary chapter. Since then, Jurek Dybał – conductor, cultural manager, and musician of the Vienna Philharmonic – has become the artistic leader of the orchestra.
Since October 2022, NADIIA has operated under the patronage of Katowice City of Gardens – the Krystyna Bochenek Cultural Institution as part of the „We Support” program by the National Institute of Music and Dance. Katowice, a city with a rich musical tradition, has become the center of the orchestra’s activities, providing infrastructure, artistic support, and new creative opportunities. From the start of their stay in Poland, the musicians have been supported and cared for by the Purpurowy Stradivarius Polska Association.
Our goal is not only to preserve the Ukrainian orchestra but also to create a space for young musicians to grow and share their creativity.
Every form of support will help us save a group that has gathered Ukraine’s best young artists for 30 years, overcome the emotional and economic impact of the war, and preserve jobs for musicians who have dedicated their lives to their passion.
